We moved departure and it was good deal. Great four days in a luxury flying thermals conditions. There are breaking down personal records – two boys flew nearly 80 km. Chairman of the overcame his fear 😉 and began to fly high and took a flight with return! Apparently there was also acrobatics, but its description cannot be publicly reproduce 😀

Just Bassano with all the trimmings – parachutes, sun, wine, pizza, barbecue and gelato. And in addition hike for flight at sunrise and repetition for long sleeping owls in day time …

Paragliding is a wonderful sport and the Czech Republic have great conditions for its. Nice places are not only in the Beskid, but also in the Czech Central Mountains, Giant Mountains, in the Jeseníky, Šumava, in the Highlands, Pálava and even in the Erzgebirge spite of their harsh title.

Quality flight area is a sufficient number of starting positions for various wind directions assured runway, parking. It’s great if these runways are also various altitudes, which make it possible to fly even at different strong wind. If it is then around these areas functional infrastructure – that is easy to access, weather probes, webcam or refreshment, toilets and proximity of mountain rescue – a brand ideal and every pilot in such a place like Flits. And all that you can find in Beskydy. Beskydy because it is all about.

Lysá hora

The highest point is Beskydy – Lysa hora. This is an interesting place for many athletes and it’s probably the most beautiful views of the Tatras and Fatra, when visibility is good. From the paraglider we see things better and cleaner, so there is the reason to take the paraglider with.

Owner of the forests, Lesy CR s.p. ,  somehow tolerated northwest runway is a traditional runway for a flight from Lysá hora. It’s a steep starting small, covered with dense blueberries. You can prepare your glider on blueberries fields and than carefully make few quick steps. The slope is really sharp and when he blows a little, we are in the air right now. When there is no wind, so it is a struggle with the speed, bilberries, buoyancy and spruces. Western wind is still tolerable, but when it blows from the southwest, it is in this place, most of the action for the “Czech golden hands” – when it is necessary to disentangle the glider from the undergrowth.

Start withstand even relatively agile NW wind because that us and with the frequent fires thermals high above the Lysá hora, and there are ways of dealing with just a little more. Well, mostly just release the brakes, which is trying to stabilize the glider pilots with fast gaining height or help and walked speed system. Advanced technology and nylon reinforced leading edge, along with new aerodynamic “reinforcements” enable safe flight on speed in turbulent conditions, so why not to use it.

What is important to watch – it is the height of clouds, because it is not a coincidence, and did not get to catapult above the base of clouds. The normal height of the bases of cumulus over Lysa hora is 1800-2000 meters. Often, however, especially in spring conditions are significantly lower. And in the spring – that we are hungry after flying, we want to go for a walk up the hill, we first thermals – Lysa is at this time very appealing. Just a few seconds before bursting speed system can be ready and get in front of the hill, so we’re there. So with that count and solve it before it occurs.

Conversely, the highest ceiling in the Beskydy range around 3,000 we can use the lift up just to 2700 meters in height. Higher hight we we had to leave to larger aircrafts.

With that base I emphasize this, because air traffic over Lysa hora is superior – also pilots gliders like to delve height above Lysa hora and the pilots of ultralight often flies Lysa hora view just out of interest. Therefore, caution is essential at this point rule. For blueberry starting, frequent strong winds and thermals are active Lysa hora considered challenging terrain flight.

Even on stage is difficult start on the southwest side of Lysá hora. There is a footpath which directly borders the National Nature Reserve Mazak. It is part of the PLA perceived very sensitively and space launches from this place are not only technically demanding, but environmental downright undesirable. Southwest and south winds in the Beskydy Mountains are often more powerful and therefore I would definitely recommend to choose for this wind direction starting on Skalka or Prašivá.

But what can certainly be called a simple starting place, it is the southeast slope, which is enough space and the departure from it is quite simple. The question is, what then. South-easterly winds in our country are not very common and afternoon thermals would on the south-eastern side of a steep slope high certainly bet.

If you then want to fine land, you need to head back to Raškovice – until the end of the beautiful village where Pension pod Žorem before him on the right side of the road in the direction of flight is longer meadow. Landing on it is simple for calm in the afternoon thermals with a stronger flow there is quite a lot of turbulence, but the man behind the ground there always somehow slaps. Beware of the wires, which are everywhere.

Maybe you want to learn more about the various landing sites during a flight from Lysá hora. But it is so that if you have such a high altitude – about 900 meters away and the thermal potential, can land anywhere in the Beskydy Mountains. So it depends on where you come to Lysa hora and where you leave your car. Quick exit from the parking lot of the Hotel Bezruč in Malenovice . Meadow in front of the above looks straight ahead, but it’s rise, wants to rush it and patiently wait for a proper height with which the meadow released. Simple a landing in front of the hotel Rajská gouda at Malenovice or meadows near Ostravice.

As I wrote at the beginning, Lysa is indeed widely used by tourists and athletes. And even as a flight terrain has no parameters for training novice pilots or some kind of safe runways, plus inflected capriciousness unusual wind conditions, the traditional meeting place for paragliding pilots who currently face harsher Beskydy flying search.

The PLA it under the heading Beskydská škola létání as a guarantor of compliance with agreed conditions, already in 2011, held talks with the method of use of runways on Bald Mountain, and we agreed on a time-limited use of Bald Mountain for paragliding flying. Use is therefore part of the PLA permits, rules of operation with a clearly defined responsibility to respect the ban on the use of air field Lysa hora 1.4. to 10. 5. Having regard to breeding periods of specially protected animal species.

What by all involved a very negative effect on endangered species – that is to operate sightseeing flights over Lysa hora from a nearby airport in Lubno. And that is meant mainly motor flying motor paraglider, flying low over the treetops. Of course, the situation is not helped by significantly slower compared to other years motorized airplanes.

In the end, I wanted to like this highlight the need to communicate with representatives of the PLA with the owners of areas to seek and propose solutions, discuss the financial resources to invest some of the money that paragliding pilots from companies collect and especially to guarantee the agreed conditions.

Thanks to this approach has free flying in Beskydy his place and, I believe, an exciting future.

Friendly camp, grill, luxury pizzeria with lovely service, millennial monuments, good take-offs, landing strip and thermals were all in place Bassano del Grappa and we enjoyed it to the fullest … Huge spring thermals barely let us land, so we started the season with long hourly flights. 🙂

Už to začínají být vzdálené vzpomínky, ale v našich hlavách jsou ještě živé! Některým z nás se splnilo přání se tam vrátit a ti ostatní teď mají to přání také…

Stabilně letové nepálské počasí nám opět dalo dvanáct letových dní z dvanácti. A ne leadajakých – padaly osobní rekordy a otvíraly se nové horizonty…

Naše expedice se ale neomezila jen na paragliding – nestačili jsme se otáčet za všemi divy té nádherné země a dostatečně vyzpovídat ty milé lidi – musíme se vrátit!

WHERE IS THE RUPTURE?

Sometimes the glider gets stuck about trees, bushes and other obstacles around starters and landings. Occasionally, the canopy will pick up a stone or root on the starter, and a hole will appear there when we inadvertently strike it on the rocky ground and cause more. The vast majority of these situations will definitely not end our summer holidays if we have a sufficient supply of self-adhesive Skytex (or Dokdo, depending on what your paraglider is).

WHAT TO DO WITH THIS?

Put a small hole, 2-3 cm, with a patch, preferably from the inside of the canopy (it will be less visible and less affected by the boundary layer). The patch should ideally be large enough to extend beyond the borehole edges as much as the hole is large. This is the answer to the question that has not been identified so far: How can I make big holes with a patch? It depends on how big a sticker I have available. Larger holes will be patched on the other side (on the outside), so the result will be a bit firmer. If we have a half-meter whole in the canopy, we will not be making meter and a half overlap. There will be an overlap of about 10 cm.

HOW TO DO IT? 

For bonding, we need, besides the patch, a suitable solid surface to stretch the glued part. For small holes, just a palm or knee is enough, an ideal table, bench or padded backpack, etc. And we will need a total of at least four, but rather six hands ? If we want to stick on the inside of the canopy we must first turn the glued part out, That is, Pull it through the filling opening of the chamber. We straighten the glued part on the work surface so that we hold the edges of the hole tightly together, but the fabric is stretched out without wrinkles and wrinkles. In this position, the hands of two assistants are just holding him. From a patch that we measure and cut out with rounded corners, we remove the paper covering the adhesive, but not all of it – at one end we leave it to manipulate the patch without sticking to our fingers. We will focus on the patch on one side and press on the glued surface at one end and then proceed with the gradual smoothing of the finger from one end to the other (gradually remove the glue cover paper) and glue it so tightly without wrinkles and bubbles.

IS IT SAFE?

We have talked about the ruptures in the open material. When the canopy is ruptured along a seam, the patch repair is more complex and the result, especially from the viewpoint of the resulting strength, is rather uncertain. Be aware that the material is being stressed in all directions. During a steady flight, it is only a few decagrams, but in dynamic maneuvers (and not to mention pure acrobatics), or in rapid recovery from collapses it can be multiples of kilograms. Will it keep our glued work? Where there are multiple parts of the fabric at different angles in the seam, the patch bonding is not reasonably feasible. Even if we manage to keep a rupture at least so that the glider is held together and the air does not run out of it with caution, it will be a reasonable solution to send the manufacturer / importer without delay. But do not worry about sticking – where the patch is on a flat surface, then the fabric is stronger and with a much better porosity.
